Getting Involved

The power of one person to make a difference.
One Adult, One Young Person,
One Hour, Once A Week for One year.
What  a difference.
Mentors and Mentees have the power
to do that for each other.

Volunteer Your Time, Volunteer your talent,
Volunteer to share what you Know.

As you start this day, stop a minute. Think....

Think about the people in your life from times past who have helped you.

The ones who took time, the ones who cared,

They helped you become the person you are today.

Whisper a thank you for them.

Were they rocket scientists?

In most cases, I doubt it.

Yet he or she made an impression on your life.

They poured something of themselves into your life.

They were a mentor to you.

In the US there were 17.6 million youth

identified as wanting or needing a mentor.

Some of them live in your state, in your county,

Maybe even in your neighborhood.

  January is National Mentoring Month.

Why not thank your mentors,

Better yet, why not thank them by becoming a mentor yourself.

Mentored youth are more likely to finish school,

less likely to use alcohol and drugs and

less likely to become involved in fights.

Mentoring Matters.

You could spend an hour a week watching a talk show rerun

or you could help a child get closer to meeting his or her potential.

Aren’t you glad someone chose to spend time with you?

Need A Mentor
If you need a mentor, live in our eight county area and are between 4 and 18 years old we are a great place to start.  We partner with other people who also want to help you in each county.  We have a program that screens and matches responsible adults and young people who have a parent, guardian or someone who has been like a parent to them who has become incarcerated, or is on parole, home confinement, day reporting or otherwise involved with the criminal justice systm.  We  attempt to refer young people interested in mentoring who do not fall in that catagory with the agencies in their county that may be able to help them.

A Mentor is not someone to replace a parent.  They are friends, who spend time with us, listen to us, and help us see the potential we have with in us.

If you need a mentor or just want to know a little more about us

Becoming a Mentor
If you would like to be a mentor to a young person, and you live in the areas we serve, our program is a great place to start.  Once you contact us about your interest, we will give you some more information.  We will also ask you to complete a volunteer application packet.  This packet includes a consent for a criminal background investigation.  We screen all our volunteers before we consider matching them with a young person.  We then schedule some training hours with you, discuss your interests, what you expect and what we expect.
We continue to provide support and training through out the match.  We ask our mentors to make a one year commitment to spending one hour a week with a young person.  Longevity in the caring relationship that we call mentoring, is the key to success.  Success in seeing one's potential.  Success in reaching opportunties.  Success in developing those skill that they too may one day choose to share with others thanks to someone like you.
